Hi Anil,
There are different properties of steel on which its selection criteria depends. These categories can be divided in three major groups:
1. Mechanical properties
2. Service properties
3. Magnetic properties

The main properties under each group are as below:

Mechanical properties:

a. Hardness
b. Strength
c. Yield point
d. Elongation
e. Reduction of area
f. Impact value
g. Elasticity
h. High temperature stability

Service properties:
a. Cooling rate
b. Carbide formation
c. Resistance to wear
d. Forgeability
e. Machinability
f. Scaling
g. Nitrability
h. Resistance to corrosion

Magnetic properties:
a. Hysteresis
b. Permeability
c. Coercive force
d. Remanence
e. Loss of Watt

All the above properties mentioned above have a significant role in its selection at the design condition in which it is going to be used.
Above properties of steel are due to the different alloying elements present in the steel. Different alloying elements help in changing different properties of steel eg. High chromium content in the steel increases it’s corrosion resistance property. By increasing and decreasing the quantity of each of the alloying element you can achieve the desired properties in steel.

Hope this helps.
